Exploring Macau: Culture, Cuisine, and the Crown Jewel of Cotai, the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau
If you’re planning a winter escape just a short flight from Bangkok, ...
Italian dining isn’t difficult to find around the city. There’s probably a place that does pasta and pizza within a kilometer of you right now. But Italian dining done right—that’s something else entirely.
About Eatery is one of those places. That isn’t surprising when you have someone like chef Lorenzo Rosso at the helm, who hails from Venice and also used to head the kitchen at Al Dente at The Commons Thong Lor. He has concocted a menu that isn’t too extensive while ensuring that each dish is top-notch, uncomplicated, and made fresh. The restaurant calls itself a modern trattoria, though the dishes and aesthetics of About Eatery are nothing but classy.
From the outside, the restaurant seems deceivingly small. However, there’s actually a spacious room inside with a rustic vibe—exposed brick walls, wooden tables, and chalkboard menus contribute to the aesthetic. The centerpiece that brings the whole space together is the open kitchen surrounded by a bar that patrons can sit at, allowing them to converse with chef Lorenzo as he whips up your dish right in front of you.
Pan Roasted Sea Scallops with Celeriac and Lemon-Caper Butter
There are a number of selections you can get started on. Choose one of the chicchetti, or Venetian tapas, in their menu like the Parma Ham Croquette, which oozes with cheese as you bite into it, or the Warm Chicken Liver & Porcini Mousse which is savory goodness. The tapas, however, are separate from the actual appetizers: the Fried Crab Cakes with Arrabiata Sauce and Tartar Dip is a creamy seafood treat, while the Roasted Stuffed Squid with Spinach is a delight to bite into thanks to its generous stuffing.
A personal favorite was the Pan Roasted Sea Scallops with Celeriac and Lemon-Caper Butter, with the scallops generously smothered in the zesty creamy sauce.
It’s advisable you only go for one or two of the chiccetti and appetizer dishes—unless you have two or three people with you—because you don’t want to miss out on About Eatery’s risotto and pasta offerings. The Scampi and Pumpkin Risotto with Saffron and Scampi Emulsion is a perfect choice for seafood lovers. But if you prefer pasta over risotto, the Spaghetti Vongole with Clams and Dried Grey Mullet will do the trick. For the truffle lovers, don’t miss the Strangozzi with Sausage, Porcini, Ricotta, Roast Jus and Black Truffle. While you’re working on the main course, you can pair it up with one of their various wines and drinks.
Top off your Italian feast in a number of sweet, delicious ways. The decadent Chocolate Souffle topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream is rich and utterly satisfying, while the Baba with Chantilly Cream is light and fluffy. Though both are a great choice, nothing could ever beat the classic Tiramisu—soft, light, and just the right amount of sweetness to end your meal.
