There are numerous ways to bring laughter into your life and one of the most effective ways is simply watching comedy. Who doesn’t love some great acting and a good laugh? But did you know that laughter is actually a natural medicine, and holds a positive impact on our mental and physical health?
According to Dr. Pamela B. Rutledge, director of the Media Psychology Research Center in California, the way comedy gets through to the brain varies, making the neuronal activity in response to it very complex. Because there are many types of humor from dark humor to self-deprecation, both cognitive and affective components in the brain identify the social disconnect that makes something funny. Cognition is needed in order to get the joke, emotions allow us to enjoy humor, and when these neurons light up together visceral responses are produced.
When you laugh, the brain automatically increases levels of serotonin and dopamine. A study by the American Physiological Society researchers found that laughter lowered the levels of three stress hormones—cortisol (the stress hormone), epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) and dopac (a brain chemical which helps produce epinephrine) were reduced by 39, 70 and 38 percent respectively. Psychologists find laughter so beneficial, they have even incorporated it into therapy for people with depression.
Mental benefits of laughter:
Eases anxiety and tension
Relieves stress
Improves mood
Strengthens resilience
Triggers the release of endorphins
Helps you relax and recharge
Draws you closer to others
Physical benefits of laughter:
Improves cardiovascular health
Boosts the immune system
Decreases pain
Relaxes your muscles
Lowers stress hormones
Laughing lightens the mood and creates a relaxing atmosphere for your mind and body. Nothing can replace the feeling of laughter, because it’s one of those magical things only the brain can produce. And after laughter levels off, those positive feelings remain. Even a simple laugh can always make us feel better, no matter what we’re going through. So remember to always switch between thrillers and comedies to keep you healthy.
