‘House of the Dragon’ Shatters Records and Gets Green-Lit for Season 2

The show saw the current record for HBO premieres, called over their dragons, and said ‘dracarys’

When House of the Dragon, the prequel series to Game of Thrones, was announced, it was met with a lot of skepticism, mainly because fans were still recovering from the disappointing season finale of the original series. However, like going back to an ex that claims they’ve changed and is asking for one more chance, fans gave House of the Dragon a record-breaking premiere, which unsurprisingly led to a season two renewal.

The prequel series, which is set 200 years before the events of GoT and follows the inner power struggle of House Targaryen, kicked off with 20 million viewers watching across linear, on demand, and HBO Max—and that’s only in the US. This makes it the largest audience for any new original series in HBO history. Still doubting just how big the premiere was? The streaming service, HBO Max, actually crashed due to the influx of users signing in to watch the premiere. Meanwhile, others chose to watch the old-fashioned way on linear TV, resulting in this viral video.

The series is obviously off to a great start and HBO reportedly has plans to invest more into season two, but the biggest question now is whether the show will be able to stick the landing unlike its predecessor. Fans are rightfully afraid of getting disappointed again, and in true internet fashion, they made their feelings known through memes.

New episodes of House of the Dragon premiere weekly on Mondays at 8am on HBO GO.
