Not only are these mountains breathtaking, they’re also easily accessible with the country’s flawless public transport network of trains, trams, buses, cable cars, and ferries which can transport both visitors and residents to every corner of the nation. It’s a wonderful way to cruise through the country’s best mountain destinations, which we’ve compiled into a handy list for your next visit.
1/6 Jungfrau
The Jungfrau region is overflowing with scenic mountains, alpine meadows, cute scenic villages, and cable cars. The Jungfrau, AKA The Top of Europe, is 4,158 meters above sea level and located between the northern canton of Bern and the southern canton of Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch. An UNESCO Natural World Heritage property, you can get to Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest railway station, either by a cable car or cogwheel train.
2/6 Lauterbrunnen Village
A cozy village huddled between mountain peaks and rocky cliffs, Lauterbrunnen is full of waterfalls, colorful alpine meadows, and traditional Swiss mountain homes. You can get a cable car that runs from Stechelberg village to Schilthorn mountain for views over the Bernese Alps. The Lauterbrunnen valley is not only magic to your eyes, but it’s also one of the most significant nature conservation areas in Switzerland.
3/6 Schilthorn and Piz Gloria
Located above the village of Mürren, where you can catch a cable car to the summit, Schilthorn overlooks the valley of Lauterbrunnen in the Bernese Oberland. 2,970 meters above sea level, Schilthorn and Piz Gloria are surrounded by over 200 alpine peaks. It also features a 360-degree revolving restaurant where you can soak up the Swiss Alps from the comfort of your dining table, and is also the film location for the iconic Bond Movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
4/6 Gimmelwald
Gimmelwald is one of the last car-free villages in Switzerland, packed with traditional Chalets adorned with flowers, a cheese storehouse, and cattle wandering all around. Situated in the Bernese Oberland at 1,367 meters above sea level, the village is so enchanting it feels like something out of a fairytale.
5/6 Grindelwald First
2,168 meters above sea level, Grindelwald First is a place for beauty and adventure. Surrounded by spectacular mountains, you can enjoy hot chocolate in the mountain restaurant or float through the mountain landscape like an eagle in a First Glider. Grindelwald First is a great spot for summer adventures: First Cliff Walk, First Flieger, First Glider, First Mountain Cart, and the Trottibike. You can also see the Bachalpsee, an alpine lake surrounded by wildflowers and an incredible backdrop of glacial mountains, a scenic hour’s hike away.
6/6 The Matterhorn
One of the best-known mountains (even featured on the packaging of Swiss chocolate Toblerone), the Matterhorn towers 4,478 meters on the Swiss-Italian border southwest of the city of Zermatt. The name Matterhorn means “the peak in the meadows,” from the German words matte, meaning meadow and horn, meaning peak. Although there are a wide variety of attractions you can discover around Matterhorn, it also offers a paradise for all nature-lovers looking for peace and quiet.
