Brazilian flip-flop brand Havaianas has promised to recycle 10% of their total retail sales across Asia Pacific as part of its ReCycle initiative by 2030. To keep in line with the brand’s goal of achieving a more sustainable future, Havaianas stores in Asia will have collection locations, making recycling flip-flops effortless for customers.
As part of the ReCycle initiative, customers can bring their old pair of Havaianas slippers and place them in the ReCycle bins provided at the brand’s stores. The collected flip flops will be delivered to a local recycling partner to be converted into new eco-friendly products like sporting facilities, rubber playground flooring for use in schools, or home and office accessories like mouse pads and table mats.
First launched in Australia last October, the initiative has expanded to Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines. Taiwan and New Zealand will follow next year. Through these markets, the brand has already set up over 100 stores with collection points and anticipates another 20 monobrand stores to add collection points in 2023. Because more brands are coming up with innovative solutions, it is becoming easier for consumers to make more conscious choices in their daily lives.
The Brazilian line also has a few sustainable collections. With their IPÊ and CI collections, 7% of every purchase is donated to projects for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity. The IPÊ collection has already helped plant over five million trees in the Atlantic Forest, while the CI collection has contributed to the preservation of more than 900,000 acres of marine and coastal ecosystems in Brazil’s Abrolhos region. As for their Pride collection, 7% of net sales go out to All Out Global, a charity that is fighting for a world where no one has to sacrifice their family, freedom, safety, or dignity because of who they are or who they love.
