Whether they fulfill your need for true crime stories or random, juicy topics, we simply can’t live without podcasts! As is tradition, Spotify has wrapped up the year’s most popular podcasts, and the list couldn’t be more diverse with feminist podcasters as well as some opposing presenters. Here are the top five. Are you a listener?
Weekly true crime podcast “Crime Junkie” has gone two spots down but still remains strong within the top five podcasts of 2022. Host Ashley Flowers leans into the interest surrounding famous crimes you and your fellow crime junkie pals just can’t stop thinking about. With storytelling that is free of rabbit holes, the cases are easy to follow while still retaining suspense.
A Spotify Original podcast produced in multiple languages including Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Hindi, “Caso 63” takes the fourth-place spot and is Spotify’s first non-English podcast made for multiple markets. The scripted audio series begins with psychiatrist Elisa Aldunate’s therapy sessions with “Patient 63.” As the sessions progress, time, space, and reality begin to blur, playing with the listeners’ minds. Recently, the podcast announced the production of its English adaptation, which will feature Academy Award–winning actress Julianne Moore and Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac. Both stars are also executive producers of the series.
Recorded from the comfort of her bed, exactly like the name suggests, “Anything Goes” is US internet sensation Emma Chamberlain’s platform for talking about whatever is on her mind—clearly, there’s a huge audience for that. A refresher for anyone who needs one: Emma started her career on Youtube at the age of 17 and gained over 11 million subscribers within five years. Now 21, she adds her coffee company, Chamberlain Coffee, and this podcast to her list of accomplishments. Fans love Emma’s relatability and how she stands out from the social media image of perfection. Chamberlain recently scored a Spotify exclusive deal for her podcast, meaning that in 2023, Anything Goes will be streamed exclusively on Spotify, much like the podcast occupying this year’s number one spot.
For the second year in a row, Alex Cooper’s “Call her Daddy” podcast has made it to Spotify’s top five. One of the most listened-to podcasts in the world, Cooper discusses relevant topics such as sexuality, freedom, stereotypes, prejudices, and personal empowerment, in a raw and often provocative manner, stripping away any barriers of judgement. The woman-led empire has featured celebrity guests such as Pete Davidson, Shameless star Emma Kenny, and model Emily Ratajkowski.
For the third year running, interview podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience” has controversially gained the top spot once again. Covering everything from comedy, conspiracies, sex, and drug to race, LGBTQ rights, new science, and beyond, The Joe Rogan Experience has secured a massive fanbase of mostly men who love the podcast host for the strong opinions he unapologetically expresses even if they combat the views of his guest or will hurt his reputation.
