Commonly known as ‘co-ords’, the idea of coordinated clothing has become a staple in modern fashion. This trend involves a set of garments, typically a top and bottom, made from the same fabric or featuring a coordinating design. But where did this idea originate, and how has it evolved over time?

The concept of matching outfits dates back centuries, with roots in traditional cultural attire across the globe. From the matching kimono sets in Japan to the cohesive designs in traditional Indian wear, the idea of a coordinated set has long been a part of global dress codes. However, the modern concept of coordinated outfits as a fashion statement has a more recent history.
Early 20th century saw a significant shift in women’s fashion. The rigid rules of dress began to relax, paving the way for more practical and diverse clothing styles. It was during this period that the seeds of the co-ord trend were sown.
The 1940s and 1950s, in particular, witnessed a surge in the popularity of coordinated outfits. This era, marked by a post-war return to femininity and elegance in fashion, saw women donning matching skirt suits and dress sets, representing a new era of women’s empowerment and freedom in clothing choices.
The 1960s and 1970s brought a revolution in fashion, with bold colours, psychedelic prints, and a flair for the dramatic. This era embraced the trend with open arms, introducing a variety of styles, from matching mini-skirt sets to bell-bottomed pantsuits. Designer, Mary Quant, known for her miniskirt designs, played a significant role in popularising sets during this period.
Today, things are more versatile than ever, transcending seasons and occasions. From casual streetwear to high-end designer collections, coordinated sets are a go-to for both comfort and style. Expanding beyond tops and bottoms, and now including matching accessories bags, shoes, and even face masks.
This evolution reflects the changing of fashion and society. What began as a practical solution in traditional attire has transformed into a symbol of fashion-forward thinking and individual expression. As we continue to witness the reinvention of this trend, the co-ord is a timeless piece in the fashion world, adapting and evolving with each passing decade.
