Comme des Garçons has entered new territory in a new collaboration with Converse, creating a new silhouette for the One Star.
The Converse One Star was first introduced in 1974 as a basketball sneaker, but its popularity peaked around the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the hunt for retro sneakers began. Japanese streetwear enthusiasts and collectors preferred the simplistic athletic style of the sneaker. Then, key players in the grunge scene adopted the shoe. When the sneaker was spotted on Nirvana’s lead vocalist Kurt Cobain and American skate legend Guy Mariano, not only did the sneaker become one of Converse’s most iconic kicks, it also became a social revolution icon.
Writing the next chapter of the simple sneaker’s story, the latest collaboration sees the One Star playfully updated with the Play Comme des Garçons heart and eyes logo, pairing with the One Star’s signature cut-out star design on black and white cotton canvas. True to the silhouette’s emblematic look, the design keeps a minimal palette with contrast pinstripes and heel stays.
Co-creative directors Ronnie Cooke Newhouse and Karl Bolander, and photographer Craig McDean, captured the new style in a series of sleek, stylized photographs and accompanying video.
The new Converse x Play Comme des Garçons One Star is now available at Club21.
