Friday Future Lister: Koko Tiamsai Builds Inclusive Workplaces and Strengthens the Next Generation of Trans Leaders

Koko Tiamsai, a DE&I leader and trans advocate, uses her corporate role to challenge biases, promote inclusion, and empower future trans leaders.

With a background in gender studies from SOAS University of London, Koko Tiamsai is passionate about creating a world where everyone is accepted and celebrated for who they are. Her work centres on leading diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) initiatives within the private sector, an arena she sees as positioned to drive both societal and legislative change due to its agility and economic influence.

Currently serving as the Global Internal Communications Lead at East-West Seed, an agribusiness dedicated to improving the lives of farmers through high-quality vegetable seeds, Koko plays a key role in fostering a workplace that values diversity and inclusion. Through strategic and empathetic communication, she helps connect over 4,000 employees to the company’s purpose, advancing its mission while supporting the well-being of farmers around the world.

We take a closer look at Koko’s career journey, what inspires her, and how she hopes to create an impact through her work and advocacy.

The Source of Her Success

“My motivation is fueled by the belief that every step taken towards gender equality and inclusivity creates a ripple effect, shaping progress within the corporate world while also influencing broader societal change.”

Koko also draws inspiration from two influential women who have shaped her path. Her mother, a single parent and passionate feminist, has been a constant source of strength. By witnessing her commitment to equality, Koko developed a strong sense of purpose and a drive to become a more compassionate and responsible person.

Another key figure in her journey is Dr. Rattana Lao, a respected academic and mentor, who played a key role in Koko’s journey, shaping her academic path and broadening her views on activism and social change.

The film Legally Blonde (2001) also serves as an inspiration for her work. The story is about Elle Woods’ journey from underestimated to accomplished lawyer, which resonates with her. The film highlights self-belief and the power of defying stereotypes, all while staying true to oneself.

“The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is to be authentic, to carry and speak my true voice for change. Embracing authenticity allows me to stay true to myself while fostering genuine connections with others. It’s a guiding principle that helps me navigate both personal and professional aspects of life with sincerity, leading to more meaningful and fulfilling experiences,” Koko adds.

Empowering Trans Voices in Business

“My most noteworthy accomplishment lies in reshaping the narrative for trans individuals within the corporate realm.”

“As a trans woman, I set a new standard for gender inclusivity in my workplace. My strategic positioning, coupled with my academic knowledge, allowed me to break through barriers and challenge gender biases ingrained in Thai society.”

She chose the private sector as her platform for change because it offers two important advantages. It allows for a quicker pace of progress compared to more traditional routes, and it holds considerable economic influence. This gives her the opportunity to introduce new standards for gender equality in a practical and visible way.

“I believe one of the most meaningful challenges in my career has been navigating gender biases and societal expectations, especially as a trans woman from Isan with a challenging background.”

One of her earliest challenges is becoming the breadwinner for her family at just 15, after the loss of her father. The journey of overcoming socioeconomic hardships and societal prejudices was deeply personal. It was about challenging external expectations while proving to herself and her family that they could rise above their circumstances. This strengthened her determination to keep advocating for and supporting every community she works with.

Her Vision

“I aim for my legacy to embody a resilient fighter, someone who understands the system, is able to navigate it, and deconstructs its norms. I hope to leave behind a blueprint for future generations to challenge and transform established structures.”

“I aspire to give back to my community by fundraising to support educational initiatives.”

Her focus is also on supporting schools that provide specialised training for young trans children, aiming to equip them with the skills to become confident leaders. She believes trans representation in leadership is essential to reducing stigma, promoting acceptance, and creating a more inclusive society. By empowering the next generation, she hopes to inspire informed, empathetic decision-making and drive a future that values equity and diversity.
