Fashion, as the world is now largely aware, has greater implications on us as consumers than how something makes us look and feel. It’s equally important to consider a product’s impact on the environment, and that’s why at Koktail, we like to give space to brands that are championing sustainability in the market and demonstrating that design and quality don’t have to suffer when doing so. For this issue, we’re highlighting four, Thailand-based, eco- friendly shoemakers to kickstart your ethical wardrobe.
If you prioritise eco-friendliness as much as comfort, make Maddy Hopper your next sneaker. The brand began with four childhood friends who wanted to start a business with three things in mind: sustainability, function, and simple design. The rest is history. Handcrafted in Thailand, Maddy Hopper’s sneakers are marked by their earth-tone palette, super comfy insoles, and combination of 100% recycled plastic bottle canvas and natural latex as their shoes’ main materials. Apart from sneakers, the brand also carries socks made from bamboo fibre.
Eco 2 Surface© is Gemio’s unique process of fortifying rubber with upcycled fabric, making for durable and eco-friendly pairs of shoes. With the slogan “You move, we support”, the brand is also big on ergonomics, ensuring every part of the shoe is carefully designed to optimise comfort. Moreover, Gemio is enthusiastic about its Thai identity, often highlighting traditional textiles and supporting local artisans to keep their craft alive.
A PETA-certified vegan company, Hexa is passionate about finding that balance between the best material for their products and also for the environment. As a result, neutral to positive impact is achieved with every item produced, and their shoes are made comfy enough to wear all day on your feet. Check out their latest collection, which includes the feminine Kate wedge pump and adorable Cruz kangaroo loafer, among other designs.
Earthtone sources locally-available, renewable, and recycled materials to make its biodegradable fashion products, which includes footwear. The brand’s previous designs have incorporated materials like pinewood, organic cotton, PU, and water hyacinth. Each piece is also made by hand and donates a portion of its profits to charity.
