ICYMI: The Highlights From Apple’s WWDC22 Keynote

Everything you need to know, from a new OS for the iPhone and Mac to a new chip

Yesterday, Apple unveiled a number of new things their users can look forward to, including the latest iOS to give your iPhone a new look, a new MacOS, and their brand new chip, which will be in two new MacBooks. Here’s everything you need to know from Apple’s keynote at WWDC22.

1/4 iOS 16

The different looks your lockscreen can have on the iOS 16

The new iOS 16 brings lock screen customization to the iPhone. Users will now be able to change the font of the clock, choose colors, and add widgets to the lock screen. The demo from the keynote showcased some sleek designs. However, Apple is a little late to the game since Android users have enjoyed this feature for a while now.

Notifications will have a drastically different presence from now on. Instead of stacking up on the screen, you’ll see them roll up from the bottom. You can also hide them so that you’ll only see the number of notifications you have unopened, on the bottom of the screen.

Other new features include being able to customize a specific lock screen tied to the Focus feature, the ability to edit or unsend sent messages, and being able to identify the subject of a picture to touch and drag it into another app. The Home app has also been updated with a more streamlined look as well as CarPlay, which gives your car screen a sleeker design.

2/4 watchOS 9

The Workout app on the new watchOS

Aside from new watch faces, which is a given with every new OS, the latest update has a new Medications app, which help you keep track of your meds and give you reminders of when you need to take them. It can also warn you about possible harmful combinations after taking certain meds, so for example, it will warn you not to drink alcohol after you’ve taken a specific pill. The Workout app has also been updated with new metrics so that you can easily see all the necessary info while you exercise.

3/4 New MacBooks with the M2

The latest MacBook Air

Surprise, surprise—Apple has launched their latest chip and has wasted no time in putting it into two new MacBooks. The M2 has 50 percent more memory bandwidth than its predecessor and also boasts an “18 percent faster CPU, a 35 percent more powerful GPU, and a 40 percent faster Neural Engine”. The new MacBook Air come with the new M2 and with two new finishes: midnight and starlight. It also has a 13.6-inch display with a 1080p webcam on a notch on top of the screen. The M2 is also in the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, which Apple touts as 1.4x faster than the M1 model with up to 20 hours of battery life. To many people’s chagrin, however, the TouchPad is still present.

No local release date has been given yet, but the MacBook Air will start at a price of 43,900 baht and the MacBook Pro will start at a price of 46,900 baht.

4/4 macOS Ventura

Stage Manager on macOS Ventura

The latest macOS introduces the Stage Manager feature, which allows users to organize their windows in a much more efficient manner when using the Mac. The Handoff feature, which allows you seamlessly switch between devices, is now available when doing FaceTime calls, so you can switch from an iPhone to your Mac in a snap. Finally, they’re also introducing Pass Keys, which allows users to use Face ID or Touch ID in place of passwords when accessing websites or logging into accounts. This could be the start of the password’s demise.
