Let me take you back to the 1980s when university student Francesco Cirillo devised a structured method using a pomodoro (Italian for tomato) shaped kitchen timer to organise his study schedule. This ingenious technique allowed him to embrace time as an ally rather than a source of anxiety, boosting his focus and productivity. The Pomodoro Technique is a time management strategy that revolves around breaking work into short, focused intervals known as “pomodoros.” Using the timer, Cirillo experimented with various work intervals ranging from two minutes to an hour before settling on a 25-minute pomodoro. Let’s explore the simple steps of this technique and discover tips for making optimal use of it.

Start the timer: Kick off  your first pomodoro by setting the timer for 25 minutes. Focus solely on the chosen task, avoiding any interruptions or multitasking.

Work with intensity: During the pomodoro, give your undivided attention to the task at hand. Resist the temptation to check emails or browse social media. Stay committed and productive until the timer goes off.

Take short breaks: After completing a pomodoro, take a short break of 5 minutes. Utilise this time to stretch, hydrate, or engage in a quick activity that relaxes your mind.

Repeat and reset: Repeat the cycle of working for 25 minutes and taking a 5-minute break three more times, marking the completion of four pomodoros. After the fourth pomodoro, reward yourself with a longer break of 15-30 minutes.

To fully embrace the Pomodoro Technique, it is crucial to establish the right environment and mindset. Here are a few key steps to get started:

Plan out your pomodoro’s in advance: Keeping track of the number of tasks you want to complete and the number of pomodoros you plan to use can be helpful. Remember that, in an 8-hour work day, the number of pomodoros should not exceed 16. If you find yourself reaching that limit, it’s advisable to postpone the least urgent tasks to the following day or week to prevent exhaustion. 

As Cirillo says, “concentration and consciousness lead to speed, one pomodoro at a time.”

Eliminate distractions: Minimise external distractions by silencing notifications on your phone, closing unnecessary tabs on your computer, and finding a quiet space to work. 

Set a timer: Utilise a timer to accurately track your pomodoros. Numerous apps and websites offer pomodoro timers such as Pomodone. , making it convenient to implement the technique. Also, resist the urge to browse social media during breaks and give your eyes a well-deserved rest.

Customising it  to individual needs: Moreover, you can make it a collaborative experience by involving a coworker, partner, or peers. They can check in during the 5-minute breaks to provide mutual encouragement and support.
