Siri Sala’s Travelling Chefs Series Builds Cultural Bridges with Chef Gert De Mangeleer

In this episode, diners will experience the best of Belgium and Thailand through food, drinks, and music

Called “The Travelling Chefs Series Episode 4: ‘East Meets West’ with Chef Gert De Mangeleer”, the event welcomes 30 guests per night on April 20-23. Gert de Mangeleer from Belgium—one of Europe’s top chefs—will take over Siri Sala Private Thai Villa to showcase his trademark style of Flemish cuisine masterfully integrated with Japanese influences and local seasonality.

The talented chef will be cooking in the fine dining style of his restaurant Hertog Jan in Antwerp. With his love for Asian cuisine, the way he presents local products alongside international influences has garnered him 3 Michelin stars, and a rating of 18/20 from Gault & Millau, among others. He was also awarded as the “European Chef of the Year” in 2014.

A surprise to many, Hertog Jan restaurant in Zedelgem closed its doors in 2018 as Chef De Mangeleer and his partner sommelier Joachim Boudens wanted to find time for other projects and new dreams such as focusing on farming, sustainability as well as providing more opportunities for up-and-coming chefs. In 2021, the two revived Hertog Jan in Botanic Sanctuary in Antwerp and received 2 Michelin stars within seven months after opening.

During the event, Chef De Mangeleer will offer a fixed menu in an intimate setting as guests sit back and savour the culinary experience. The balanced, well thought out menu can be compared to a Japanese omakase, where the chef selects the menu in accordance with the season.
