5 Movies to Watch This Year at the RCB Film Club

Watch films from all over the world this 2022 with RCB Film Club’s list of movies, each one sponsored by the embassy of its country’s origin. From a love story from South Africa to a heartbreaking Mexican film of a woman in a troubled relationship, this year’s lineup has something for everyone. 

1/5 Mexico: Arrancame La Vida (2008)

Screening: February 26 at 4pm

Based on the novel of the same name, the film follows Catalina Guzmán who meets a charming general named Andrés Ascencio. She falls for him and they get married despite their wide age difference. Andrés eventually becomes a politician, but Catalina realizes that there are many red flags she’s been ignoring, which sets her on a path of immense pain.

2/5 Kenya: Subira (2018)

Screening: May 28

A young girl named Subira has one dream: to swim in the ocean. The problem is that it’s against local customs. With her culture restraining her from pursuing her dream and everyone telling her to simply embrace tradition, will she decide to defy her community to go after what she wants?

3/5 Morocco: Unknown Film

Screening: July 23

4/5 South Africa: Toorbos (2019)

Screening: September 24 at 2pm

Submitted by South Africa as its entry for Best International Feature Film for the 2021 Oscars, the film tells the story of a young woman who comes from a poor forest community. She falls in love and gets married to a wealthy city-dweller, but later finds herself torn between her love for him and her love for her community. 

5/5 Finland: Tove (2020)

Screening: November 26

This biopic centers around Finnish artist Tove Jansson and follows her life from the time of WWII to around the mid-1950s. As the years pass, she meets people along the way who would help shape her life and influence her iconic creation: the Moomins.
