About Scholars of Sustenance (SOS)

Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) is a non-profit organisation founded in 2016 to address food waste and hunger across Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Operating every day, SOS rescues surplus food from restaurants, hotels, and grocery stores, then redistributes it to communities in need. Their mission aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is driven by the motto: Saving the Land, Serving the People, Feeding the Mind. This goal is realised through programs including the Food Rescue Program, School Food Drive, and Rescue Farm, which aim to minimise waste and help vulnerable groups access nutritious meals.

Thailand-Centric Efforts

SOS Thailand, the country’s first food rescue foundation, has expanded its operations from Bangkok to other major cities including Phuket, Hua Hin, and Chiang Mai. Each day, their team rescues surplus food, carefully distributing it to communities, shelters, and low-income neighbourhoods.

Through programs like the Rescue Kitchen and Healthy School Meal Programs, they provide nutritious meals to children and families while reducing food waste. The cold-chain logistics trucks operate seven days a week, ensuring that surplus food is safely delivered to those who need it most, helping to improve food equity and create a positive environmental impact.

Environmental Impact

Preventing food waste also supports the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from discarded food. Through their ongoing rescue efforts, SOS is helping to curb emissions by repurposing food that would otherwise end up in landfills. Their operations showcase how food rescue can play a role in protecting the planet, while building a more sustainable food system and fighting hunger across the region.
