With new restaurants opening every month in Thonglor, Lava isn’t a surprising sight. Chef Jeriko Van der Wolf has teamed up with Lucas Molina and Adrien Astagneau to create a restaurant that combines sophisticated dining with partying in the heart of Thonglor Soi 10.
Lava strikes a retro mood with its industrial fittings, open kitchen, and—of course—red lighting. The restaurant is named molten volcanic rock, after all.
We begin with the spicy tuna puffed wontons, which is tuna tartare and tuna mousse topped with crispy wonton and wakame; the bite of rich, buttery flavour is balanced by the crunch of puffed wonton that will leave your taste buds wanting more. If you love your prime cuts, definitely opt for the beef katsu sando. An elevated version of the iconic Japanese snack, here Black Angus beef is sandwiched in milk bread, topped with mustard seaweed and wasabi pickles—a dish designed for sharing.
My personal favourite, nonetheless, was the black cod miso: glazed cod flame-grilled to perfection, served with cucumber salad, seafood sauce, and topped with seaweed mayo.
Finally, if you're looking for a sweet treat, the triple prophecy fortune cookie dessert with salted caramel mousse and banana is both tastefully gimmicky and tasty.
The other pull of Lava is that serves both classic and inventive cocktails against a soundtrack of live music. We love the Lucky Number, a signature cocktail recommended by the bartender, which features the flavours of Thai herbs mixed with white cacao cream liqueur.
Highlighting fusion dishes with bold flavours and an extensive cocktail menu, Lava Asian Bistro & Bar is an excellent after-work location for socialising with friends or colleagues.
