Alongside her husband, Sompong Srakaew, Patima established the Labour Protection Network (LPN) in 2004 with the mission of safeguarding and enhancing the lives of migrant workers in Thailand around the region, focusing on promoting equality and human rights. In 2014, Patima played a crucial role in the rescue of 2,000 captive and stranded fishermen from remote Indonesian islands. The Associated Press coverage of this rescue effort received the prestigious Pulitzer Prize, and the story was featured in the award-winning 2019 documentary film "Ghost Fleet." Patima's impactful work earned her a Nobel Peace Prize nomination in 2017. She is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of ensuring that the seafood supply chain is free from human trafficking and labour exploitation, emphasising the need for sustainable sourcing in the seafood industry. Understanding the critical importance of timing in her work, Patima recognises that every minute could be a matter of life and death for someone. Looking ahead, Patima hopes to establish a vocational promotion fund for fishermen and their families, and rehabilitation programmes for victims of trafficking and exploitation, coupled with job training initiatives in collaboration with fishermen and employers.
