When you think of viral YouTubers and winners of YouTube’s prestigious awards, you tend to think of digital natives or the likes of Pewdiepie, not a 70-year-old Thai grandma. But Malinda Herman has done it. Little is more wholesome that her videos of her serenading her beloved chihuahua Jiw Jam—often to sleep. Malinda has over 1 million subscribers on YouTube, from all around the world, and her most popular video, a cover of Paul Anka’s Put Your Head on my Shoulder, has been viewed over 7 million times. Her story, however, is one of overcoming great obstacles. Years ago, Malinda was in a terrible accident that left her face paralysed. Refusing surgery, she opted to take up singing instead, an activity she enjoyed doing as a child. Against the odds, she started regaining muscle control in her face and started posting her covers to a YouTube channel in 2016 without any expectation. Today, Malinda’s purpose in life is to make people smile, whether it’s with a video of her singing and playing an instrument or adorable photos of Jiw Jam and her other dogs.
