Set in a contemporary, romantic setting, Le Crystal boasts impressive Lanna-style architecture made from Thai teak wood, with both interior and terrace dining options overlooking gardens down to the Ping River. Serving both French classics and European cuisine using quality local and imported produce, the restaurant offers set menus and impressive à la carte dishes. Pan-fried foie gras with peach, rocket and balsamic reduction sets the tone. Escargots à la Bourguignonne is masterful. Six snails, with a deep woody mushroom flavour, come served on a hot plate steaming in garlic. Warm, crusty baguette soaks up the delicious snail butter. The New Zealand grilled lamb chop with rosemary sauce is comforting, served medium rare. With a fabulous accompaniment of potato crouton balls, roasted cherry tomatoes and baked onion housing a warm, diced pepper salsa, the blend of flavours and textures leaves a gratifying grin. The menu is aplenty with imaginative steak and seafood dishes of distinction. The desserts come into their own. A re-imagined white chocolate cheesecake is a stylish construction with macaroon and fruit selection. Grand Marnier soufflé is served with a mild, sweet vanilla sauce accompaniment. If lightness defines the art of the soufflé, this is a Monet. The wine list is substantial, from old world to new, with well-known vineyards to select producers.
