ARTIST, NOVA CONTEMPORARY

Industry : The Arts

As a performance artist associated with Nova Contemporary, Kawita utilizes her body as a medium to explore and reflect on various social issues, including labor, feminism, oppression, and consumerism. Despite employing vivid color palettes reminiscent of the advertising world, her work creates an overall effect that elicits both physical and emotional discomfort for the viewer. Kawita''s artistic journey, akin to a superpower, emerged from a childhood marked by low self-esteem, influenced by her skinny frame and squeaky voice. Having graduated from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 2011, Kawita has since embarked on a prolific art career that has taken her across the globe, participating in events such as the Bangkok Art Biennales. Her artistic concepts are developed through rigorous research, and she draws inspiration from figures like Marina Abramovic. One of her notable works, "Cyber Labour," created in collaboration with Pat Pataranutaporn, explores the theme of human oppression in a future dominated by artificial intelligence. This theme continues to be explored in her latest work, "New Frontier," which delves into the mutation of cyborgs, alongside a live performance titled "The Machine Ghost in the Human Shell.”
