Industry : Science
Asst Prof Dr Somporn earned a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and has since been a dedicated educator at his alma mater, Prince of Songkla University. Beyond being a visionary, he is recognised as a proactive individual, particularly in the application of alternative energy, with a specific focus on solar cells—an area of personal interest. His solar-powered home was followed by electric-powered automobiles equipped with solar panels on car roofs, showcasing his commitment to sustainable energy solutions. His Solar Man in the Southernmost Border project aims to popularise the use of solar cells and alternative energy at the community level, and establishing a network of local trainers to disseminate knowledge and foster sustainable energy security within communities. Dr Somporn also provides knowledge-based information to local communities, employing computer-generated models to illustrate how development projects might impact communities and the environment. This approach empowers local residents to make informed decisions, ensuring that the future of their environment is shaped by their choices rather than corporate interests. Dr. Somporn is also a co-founder of Pattani Bay Watch (PBWatch), an organisation dedicated to natural disaster prevention and mitigation.
